Biblioterapia: estudo comparativo das práticas biblioterápicas brasileiras e norte- americanas / Bibliotherapy: comparative study on bibliotherapeutic practices in Braziland in United States / La biblioterapia: un estudio comparativo de las prácticas biblioterapéuticas del Brasil y de Estados Unidos

A biblioterapia é um processo de leitura que auxilia as pessoas a controlarem seus sentimentos e assim buscarem estratégias para resolver seus problemas tanto de ordem psicológica quanto física. A partir dessa afirmação e sabendo da necessidade de aprofundamento nessa área, apresentamos uma revisão de literatura sobre o tema no contexto nacional e norte-americano. Buscamos apresentar uma breve descrição do processo de leitura, em especial da leitura terapêutica e de sua aplicação nas práticas biblioterapêuticas. No Brasil, os projetos de biblioterapia revelaram práticas voltadas para a leitura de livros, música, desenhos e outros instrumentos em escolas, asilos, hospitais, etc. Os norte-americanos utilizaram como instrumento em seus projetos fundamentalmente a leitura de livros. Percebe-se que a biblioterapia possui resultados positivos nos dois países. Concluímos que a prática da biblioterapia contribui para melhorar a qualidade de vida.

Bibliotherapy is a reading process, which helps people to control their feelings so that they can seek strategies to solve their psychological and physical problems. From this statement, and knowing the benefits this area would achieve by going further on research, a review of the literature in bibliotherapy was made,focusing on Brazil and United States. We attempted to provide a short description of the process of reading, particularly the therapeutic reading and its use in bibliotherapeutic practices. In Brazil, the projects inthe field of bibliotherapy demonstrated activities using books, music, drawings and other instruments inschools, nursing homes, hospitals, and so on... North Americans, on the other hand, fundamentally usedthe books as tool on their projects. It is possible to note that bibliotherapy has positive results in both countries. We have come to the conclusion that the bibliotherapy contributes to improve the quality of life.

La biblioterapia es un proceso de lectura que ayuda a las personas a controlar sus sentimientos y así buscar estrategias que puedan resolver sus problemas tanto psicológicos como físicos. A partir de esta declaracióny conociendo la necesidad de un mayor desarrollo en este campo de actividad, presentamos una revisión literaria sobre el tema de la biblioterapia en el contexto de Brasil y de Estados Unidos. Se buscó presentar una breve descripción del proceso de la lectura, especialmente la lectura terapéutica y su aplicación en las prácticas biblioterapéuticas. En Brasil, los proyectos de biblioterapia presentaron prácticas destinadas a la lectura de libros, música, dibujos y otros instrumentos en las escuelas, asilos, hospitales, etc. Los norteamericanos utilizaron fundamentalmente la lectura de libros como una herramienta en sus proyectos.Se observa que la biblioterapia tiene resultados positivos en ambos países. Concluimos que la práctica de biblioterapia ayuda a mejorar la calidad de vida.

Toxic Texts and Reading Remedies: Literary Medicine in Eighteenth-Century Print Cultures.

Today the idea of reading for health is perhaps most commonly associated with the term bibliotherapy. This seemingly new practice might be considered a significant shift of public and professional medical attitudes when compared with historical interpretations of the impact of reading on individuals' health. Much historiography concerning the reception of popular literature in eighteenth-century print culture has focused on the belief that readers of fiction, most often women, were at risk of corrupting their own minds and bodies through their reading choices. Yet, although popular, this view was not exclusively subscribed to by either medical practitioners or the wider public. This article reveals perspectives that warned against and celebrated the effects of reading on human health during the eighteenth century. Unlike what we see from much contemporary scholarship there is, in fact, a range of evidence which demonstrates that eighteenth-century medical practitioners were already engaging with the concept of reading as a therapeutic activity.

Medicus Deus: a review of factors affecting hospital library services to patients between 1790-1950.

QUESTION: What are some of the historical societal, medical, and public health trends leading to today's provision of hospital library services to patients? DATA SOURCES: Literature from the archives of the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association and other library sources, medical journals, primary historical documents, and texts from the history of medicine form the core of this review. STUDY SELECTION: The period of review extends from about 1790 through 1950 and focuses solely on trends in the United States. Of primary concern are explicitly documented examples that appear to illustrate the patient-physician relationship and those between librarians and their patient-patrons during the earliest years of the profession's development. DATA EXTRACTION: An historical timeline was created to allow the identification of major trends that may have affected library services. Multiple literature searches were conducted using library, medical, and health anthropology resources. When possible, primary sources were preferred over reviews. MAIN RESULTS: Juxtapositioning historical events allows the reader to obtain an overview of the roots of consumer health services in medical libraries and to consider their potential legacy in today's health care libraries. CONCLUSION: This review article highlights early developments in hospital library service to patients. Further research is needed to verify a preliminary conclusion that in some medical library settings, services to the general public are shaped by the broader health care environment as it has evolved.

Remembering the 1978 and 1990 task forces on self-help therapies.

A special series on self-administered therapies was edited by Forrest R. Scogin for the Journal of Clinical Psychology (Volume 59, Number 3). Articles in the edited series failed to mention two task forces on self-help therapies that were sponsored by groups within the American Psychological Association in 1978 and 1990. Consideration of the work by these task forces provides an historical perspective for the issues and recommendations provided in Scogin's series.
